We are an unconventional, secular, homeschooling family. We moved to the beautiful Finger Lakes region outside Ithaca New York about three years ago, and were primarily in the Southwest United States prior to that. We've homeschooled in the past using virtual academies but this past year was our first year homeschooling all on our own. We have a very nice local school but made the choice to withdraw and homeschool to allow more flexibility in what and how we learned. And now the introductions:
- FRIGG That's me, Mom. I am Director of The Bifröst School. My responsibilities include researching, implementing, and teaching all curriculum and activities, as well as driving all over the place. All the time.
- LOKI 10-year-old daughter. Think Hermione Granger, but meaner and louder. She swims, is a cheerleader, and plays softball. She currently plans to work at JPL as a Rocket Scientist and land a rover on Europa.
- THOR 12-year-old son. Plays football, wrestles, is starting crew, and loves Dungeons and Dragons. His current plan is to be a celebrity fitness trainer. His plan last week was to be a pharmacist in Alaska who rides a motorcycle and has a reality show. Thor is returning to our local school in the fall so he can continue to play football and wrestle for the school, as NY State law only allows students in full-time attendance at public schools to participate in interscholastic sports. Which sucks.
- HEIMDALL Nearly-19-year-old daughter. She's generally at college in Rochester where she's studying television production, but is home for summer and breaks. She is my tech adviser and IT consultant. Her plan is to produce quality programming that provides an accurate representation of typically under, and poorly, represented populations. And destroy the patriarchy.
- ODIN Dad. He's the funding.
Despite being disorganized, overwhelmed, and extremely immature, we do our best to provide a quality learning environment for the younglings. I hope that our experiences might assist you in whatever educational path you choose for your family. Welcome!
